The mortise and tenon joint involves fitting together two pieces of wood:
The tenon is a piece shaped from the wood mass, at the end of a post, often cut in a rectangular shape. The mortise, a cavity carved in the other piece to receive the tenon.
Once assembled, the two pieces fit perfectly, forming a solid angle, often at 90°.

Tenon

The dovetail joint consists of fitting two pieces of wood together using a series of trapezoidal cuts.
One piece has tails (wide at the base, narrow at the top). The other piece has corresponding notches called "pins".
Once fitted together, these shapes naturally resist any pulling apart.
