Every piece of solid wood furniture that is crafted by hand has something unique. This type of material can bring more to your living space than factory-made, plastic, glass, metal or MDF, purely because it is natural. Furniture made from synthetic materials is churned out by machines to fulfil a specific blueprint. The result is an army of cloned furniture pieces that are more a testament to the genius of factory technology than anything else. Hand made furniture has more presence. A hand made wardrobe or chair is a piece of history. Carrying the markings of the craftperson’s work and the genuine graining from its growth as a tree. Reading these signs can tell you something about the care and appreciation that has gone into its creation.

There is something particularly appealing about having something completely natural in your room space. Natural materials ensure that you are getting a piece of high quality furniture that is long lasting, but they also bring warmth and colour to the space. In an age when ecology is becoming ever more important, clever ways of appropriating and recycling natural materials for use in furniture are becoming increasingly valuable.

Tikamoon’s River Console is a great example of this kind of ecological design. Composed of driftwood branches, that have been reclaimed from the river, and a clear glass table surface, the River Console finds a way to combine natural resources in an artistic fashion, without having to use any nails, or synthetic adhesives

Other examples would be the River headboard and River end table. These furniture pieces are also made from light-coloured, reclaimed driftwood and show how simple it can be to create something truly beautiful with limited resources.  If nothing else, perhaps these furniture pieces will get you thinking about how to be resourceful, and take advantage of the unused and unwanted gems that mother nature has offered us.
