There are 3 key elements that make up a bathroom: comfort, peace and warmth. It is more difficult than you might think to generate these 3 elements in your bathroom. Flat pack, ready-made bathroom’s with their gleaming white fitted cupboard and porcelain sink claim are often an easy and cheap fix for a new bathroom. The result is clean and uncluttered but also often cold, and more concerning still, soulless. A bathroom that is a warm, comfortable and peaceful place to rest needs to be made from carefully selected materials that bring life and energy into the space.

The core furniture pieces

A great bathroom starts with the bath, shower and washstand. These are the core elements of the bathroom that you will be using every day. Go for a washstand that is made from solid teak wood. Teak is one of natures hardest and most durable woods and it will bring warmth and colour into the room, in the same style as a Scandinavian sauna. This in turn will make the room a comfortable and cheering place to rest and relax.

The light

The impact of light on a bathroom is often underestimated. More often that not the bathroom is seen as a place to visit quickly for a shower and leave, therefore light is not necessary. This is a narrow-minded attitude to the bathroom that is inherited from those people who structured and built our houses to have small pokey bathrooms many years ago.  A more modern and expansive approach is to see the bathroom as another part of the house where you can relax. A large bathroom mirror will add depth to the space and reflect light around the room.

The washbasin

Marble is often seen as a luxury material. It is difficult to find well-crafted, high quality marble at a decent price. This shouldn’t put you off adding some marble to your bathroom though. A marble washbasin can be surprisingly cheap and can be the perfect centrepiece to finish your bathroom.
